International CDMA Retirement FAQs

General Information

How has Verizon Wireless' international travel service changed?

With many of Verizon's international CDMA partners retiring their CDMA networks in favor of GSM and LTE technologies, CDMA roaming is no longer available for Verizon's customers traveling outside of the US, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands. CDMA-Only (non-GSM) devices will no longer work when traveling outside of these areas.

For your future international travel needs, a 4G or 3G World Device is required. World devices can be used in the US as well as in more than 220 other countries using available GSM and LTE technologies.

To determine if your phone will work in a specific country, and to find out more about coverage and pricing information, visit our Trip Planner.

Do I need to upgrade my phone if I'm traveling abroad?

That depends on your phone and where you're traveling. If you have a CDMA-only (non-GSM) device, your device will no longer work outside of the US, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. 4G and 3G World Devices will continue to work internationally. We recommend you check our Trip Planner before you travel to check current network availability and device requirements.

Where can I find a list of World Devices?

Visit our World Devices shopping page to find a device that will work internationally.

Will I need to do anything different once I upgrade to a 4G LTE World Device?

Your device will automatically connect to GSM/LTE networks where available. Please note that international voice and data features are required. See our International Travel FAQs for more information.

Can I use my phone while traveling in Mexico or Canada?

Where can I use international data while traveling outside the US?

We currently support data use in more than 220 countries. Visit our Trip Planner to see if you'll be able to use international data where you're traveling. Please note that the Trip Planner also shows current device specific coverage maps.
